Falling Dollar, Rising Prices & Patience

No doubt you've heard more than enough about the falling value of the dollar vs. other currencies. Our importers have to pay more to get the same products, and as a result that's reflected in rising retail prices. We're seeing wines take increases up to as much as 40% compared to early 2007. Rising gasoline prices have increased the cost of shipping to make even domestic products more expensive.

Depressing as that is, there is something that we can do. We’re buying more and more of our wines under Wyoming’s Direct Shipping law which lets us buy many wines directly from the winery or (in the case of imports) the importer. When we buy in large enough quantities, shipping costs are relatively small and by buying direct we’re able to drop our prices when the product otherwise would have gone up. Hurray!

The reason I bring this up is because in some cases, direct shipping wine requires more patience. A quick look around the wine department will show you plenty of empty space on our shelves. These products are usually something we have started buying direct and we are either waiting until we need a sufficient quantity to write an order or until the order is ready to be sent out. This requires more patience from everyone, but we hope you’ll appreciate the improved prices and the increased selection that are coming as a result.
